Modernity in art is often synonymous with rupture, challenging traditional forms, and experimenting. Christopher Mark Brennan is a researcher; his studio is a laboratory, so much so that he offers new propositions in each of his artworks.
This painting, dated 2021, depicts a section of ceiling and two adjacent walls meeting at an open angle. The left wall dominates two-thirds of the canvas. While the colors are identical, their arrangement carries an asymmetry under the influence of light. The divisions are softly outlined in dark hues. The uneven distribution of light creates an imbalance that energizes the space.

Brennan's work teaches us that art is not dependent on perfect balance. It requires a dynamic between its elements and an ability to evoke and suggest. This work achieves this feat; its walls, colors, and light engender coherence in irregularity, awakening introspection about our apprehension of emptiness and reflexive resonance in those who contemplate it.

Christopher Mark Brennan was born in 1950. He attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in St Louis, Missouri, in 1974. After 1983, he made magazine covers and artwork for Universal Studios, including three covers for Frank Zappa's CD and other musicians.
This work was more like photo-realism in large format.
He now lives in Santa Barbara and makes smaller but striking paintings. His imagination seems to have no limit!
He lives a private life, not sharing much online besides his art. I believe this allows us to see his artwork through a fresh and unbiased lens.
